Battery Materials and Technology (M.Sc.)

© Universität Bayreuth

Access to sustainable and renewable energy is one of the great challenges of the 21st century. That’s why electrochemical energy storage, esp. batteries are an essential tool for the future.

What will be future materials for more efficient batteries? Which materials will be more environmentally sustainable? How can we make batteries safer and produce them cheaper? The English-taught Master’s degree programme “Battery Materials and Technology” will prepare you for these future challenges. It addresses central issues of energy storage in an interdisciplinary manner and focusses on questions like efficiency and safety of new battery materials.

The study programme is closely linked to the Bavarian Center for Battery Technology (BayBatt), a supra-regional competence center located in Bayreuth. Students are in close contact with leading researchers in their fields and study at the interfaces of physics and chemistry, materials science and engineering, computer science and economics.

  • Fully English-taught programme (optional specialisation courses in German)
  • Duration: 2 years (4 semesters) of full-time study
  • academic requirements:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Engineering Science or an equivalent degree
    • this must include the following academic credits (total 22 credits): chemistry (min. 4), physics (min. 5) and mathematics (min. 8)
    • excellent command of written and spoken English (level B2)
  • online application: via Campus Online
  • Application deadline: 15 July 2024 (for start in October), rolling admissions
  • no tuition fees

Why come to us?

  • The programme: To get a well-founded understanding of battery technology, you will first acquire basic knowledge of Chemistry, Materials Science and Electrical Engineering. You can then expand your knowledge in areas that particularly interest you. You will gain experience in research and laboratory practicals, and put your knowledge into practice while always maintaining close contact with state of the art battery research.
  • Location: The University of Bayreuth pioneers in interdisciplinary projects that ensure us a place among the best universities internationally and BayBatt is one example of these. Its central tasks are the interdisciplinary research and development of battery storage systems as well as university teaching in the field – for the Battery Materials and Technology (M.Sc.) programme as well as its German-language sister programme Batterietechnik (M.Sc.).
  • Internationality: The University of Bayreuth has long-standing partnerships with international universities and offers 13,500 students from all over the world the ideal place to launch their career. Our university hosts students, instructors and researchers from more than 100 different countries.
